National Cut Your Energy Costs Day is celebrated annually on January 10 and serves as a reminder of how we can reduce these expenses. To honor the occasion, we’ve compiled a list of energy savings suggestions to help you make your home more efficient in 2019.
Stick to the program
Many of us spend a great deal of energy heating our homes in the winter and keeping them cool in the summer, but are we being efficient with our process? A programmable thermostat gives you the freedom to maintain the optimal temperature while you’re away from the house. Just program your schedule into the thermostat and you’ll no longer have to worry about the AC blasting while you’re at work or returning to an 80-degree home during the dog days of summer.
Minimize your appliance drain
Major appliances like refrigerators, washers and dryers represent a substantial energy drain, so next time you need to replace one, upgrade to an energy-efficient model with an ENERGY STAR® certification. These units are designed to use much less energy than their predecessors and often end up paying for themselves in savings over time.
Pull the plug
With portable devices invading our society regularly, it should come as no surprise that we are spending more energy to keep these devices charged and running. To keep costs down, plug electronics into a power strip and turn it off when they’re not in use. This removes potential “phantom” usage and can save you a bundle. Some newer power strips include an auto shutoff feature for an extra level of convenience.
Cancel the light show
Since a child, you’ve been reminded to turn off the lights when leaving a room, but did you know you can take that efficiency a step further by making a simple light bulb swap? Noonan Energy installs a number of free efficiency boosters, including LED blubs.Replace old, incandescent bulbs for a simple and affordable way to save on electricity. These bulbs will last longer and run on less energy.
Schedule a home assessment
If you’re a National Grid or Eversource customer, Noonan’s No-Cost Home Energy Assessment through the Mass Save® Home Energy Services Program can determine where and how your home is wasting energy.
